"The hard part is finding people who care.

And I thought: That’s what I should say when people ask me “how to save the world”. For a whole series of reasons:

1. In our individualistic western society, we try to do far too much alone. We need to organize, to cooperate, to collaborate. But we’re all so busy, so distracted, we don’t (most of us) have time or energy to learn what needs to be done, or to help get that work done. Finding others who can help, and know and care to do so, is even harder.
2. Enthusiasm drives a huge proportion of human endeavour. If we don’t really care, we will be hesitant to act, and we’ll give up easily in the face of adversity.
3. In my book Finding the Sweet Spot two of my key points are: (a) never start an enterprise alone; first find partners who share your passion and have complementary skills, and (b) the work you’re meant to do lies at the intersection of what you do uniquely well, what is needed in the world that no one else is precisely meeting, and what you have passion for.
4. We all need love to keep us going. Finding love is all about finding people who care.
5. Before we can care about something, we need to know about it. The important issues in the world today are complex, and it takes a lot of work to really know about them. So finding people who know, and who also care, is really hard.

I have no answer to “How do we find people who care?” and so, I admit, answering the question “How do we save the world” by saying “The hard part is finding people who care” is kinda like answering a question with a question. But I think it’s an honest answer, and one that can lead to a very important conversation on the huge challenges we face connecting, organizing, adapting, and collaborating to address the daunting and intractable problems of our time, problems which have us wondering “how to save the world”."

Edge Effect Ecotones are the most diverse and fertile area in a system. Two ecosystems come together to form a third which has more diversity than either of the other two, i.e.: edges of ponds, forests, meadows, currents etc.

Energy Recycling Yields from system designed to supply onsite needs and/or needs of local region.

Small Scale Intensive Systems start small and create a system that is managable and produces a high yield.

Make Least Change for the Greatest Effect The less change that is generated, the less embedded energy is used to endow the system.

Planting Strategy 1st-natives, 2nd-proven exotics, 3rd unproven exotics - carefully on small scale with lots of observation.

Work Within Nature Aiding the natural cycles results in higher yield and less work. A little support goes along way.

Appropriate Technology The same principles apply to cooking, lighting, transportation, heating, sewage treatment, water and other utilities.

She questions the testing of the vaccines. She questions the variations in active ingredients of the different types, but wonders why they all are supposed to be administered the same way. And she states clearly that the agreements are only in the best interests of the pharmaceutical companies. The Health Minister also states that the swine flu is being falsely labeled a pandemic and that it's milder than seasonal flu.

1 - As eleições europeias: uma oportunidade para construir uma Europa melhor Depois de 64 anos de desenvolvimento pacífico e 20 anos após a queda de Cortina de Ferro, que pôs termo à divisão do continente, o processo de integração europeia merece ser apreciado, apesar de algumas lacunas. É por isso que nós, os bispos da COMECE, apoiamos e promovemos a União Europeia como um projecto de esperança para todos os seus cidadãos.

Mesmo nestes tempos de incertezas devidas à crise financeira e económica, a União Europeia provou ser um porto de abrigo que se esforça por preservar a estabilidade e a solidariedade entre os seus membros. O Parlamento Europeu, utilizando os seus poderes e as suas competências (que serão ainda reforçados em consequência da ratificação do Tratado de Lisboa), deve contribuir para responder a essas aspirações e objectivos.

3 – O que os cristãos esperam do Parlamento Europeu: Os princípios fundamentais de qualquer sociedade são a dignidade humana e a promoção do bem comum. É por isso que estes princípios se devem encontrar no próprio coração de todas as políticas da união Europeia.

Combine the many times Dershowitz talked over Lerner, making it impossible to hear some of Lerner's points, with the tiny amount of time given by the format of the CNN show, and you can understand why Rabbi Lerner was unable to make some of the key points he came prepared to make: 1. Lerner's attempt to present the Domestic and Global Marshall Plan 2.Lerner's attempt to say that Israel needed "tough love" but done in a way that recognized that both sides have been victims of post traumatic stress disorder and cannot be ordered around by the U.S. without negative consequences. That why Lerner agrees that "getting tough" is not the right way to frame a policy that would hope to get Israel to end the Occupation. Israel and Jews, like the Palestinians, need to be treated with care and respect and generosity even as it is pushed toward the only possible solution (put forward in detail in Tikkun). 3. That both sides have been suffering, but that in the last forty-one years the suffering of the Palestinian people has been far greater and deserves immediate care and attention, though acts of terror against Israeli civilians must stop immediately as well. Nor does the video of the segment from Campbell Brown show the conversations which Rabbi Lerner had with the producers at CNN who assured Rabbi Lerner that they would not allow Dershowitz to make personal attacks on Lerner, such as the ones he then proceeded to make during the show. Rabbi Lerner chose to ignore the personal attacks and try to use the tiny little bit of time available to contrast the NSP/Tikkun approach--the strategy of generosity--with that of the mainstream policy shapers and public opinion shapers in both countries who rely on various forms of soft or hard power and domination as the way to achieve peace and homeland security. Similarly, there was no time available for Lerner to answer the misrepresentation that Dershowitz made about a. Lerner's position on North Korea and Iran b. The notion that Israel would face genocide were it to lay down its arms c. the reality of what happened and what was offered to the Palestinians at Camp David (see articles by Jerome Slater in Tikkun that decisively refute Dershowitz' claims). There is a legitimate case to be made that Rabbi Lerner should not engage in this kind of debate on television, since the very limited amount that can be said often makes our position look vulgar or mistaken or one-dimensional. On the other hand, the many emails that Rabbi Lerner received from people we did not previously know thanking Rabbi Lerner for articulating a peace-oriented perspective may strengthen the argument of those who say that even though Rabbi Lerner himself will look less profound and less a spiritiual leader when he appears in this kind of debate format, the spreading of the message that there are voices with this level of ethical and spiritual concern is itself a "kiddush hashem" (sanctification of God's name) that should be embraced whenever possible. Rabbi Lerner reported feeling sad afterwards that the discussion was so superficial, that it was so unpleasant to be talking to someone who unashamedly misrepresents or distorts the relevant facts, and that the spiritual message frequently gets glossed over in this kind of a context. (NEW YORK – C-FAM) The European Parliament's largest umbrella group backed away from its strong pro-life and pro-family positions in a new draft position statement for the 2009 European elections. Members of the mainly Christian Democrat group pushed back last week with a host of amendments aimed at restoring the organization's traditional role of safeguarding human life and the family at the European Parliament.

In a position statement released in January entitled "Draft EPP Election Document 2009," the European People's Party (EPP) removed some bedrock principles supporting traditional marriage and human life found in their 2004 position statement. The EPP is the largest group in the European Parliament with 288 members from 74 coalition parties, primarily Christian Democrat Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). Members of the EPP will use the final version of the statement in the course of campaigning in the upcoming continent-wide elections, scheduled for the 4th through 7th of June.

According to the IONA Institute, an Ireland-based pro-life and pro-family non-governmental organization, the EPP dropped explicit opposition to "euthanasia, eugenics, human cloning" which it opposed in its 2004 statement, while retaining language defending "human life in all its forms (including embryos) and at all stages; to respect the human dignity in medical and genetic advancements." Similarly, the 2004 EPP document urged the European Union (EU) not to fund "biotechnological practices that are illegal to Member states," such as the current practice of the EU to fund embryonic stem-cell research.

The EPP's 2009 statement is also weaker on the protection of the traditional family, IONA says. Whereas the 2004 document pointed to the institution of marriage as a "unique tie of man and woman," the phrase was deleted from the 2009 draft text. Conversely, in its discussion of the “demographic winter” in Europe -- a graying population having too few children -- the new text adds a proposal that EU member states change national policies to recognize "the growing diversity in family relationships," a phrase conservatives warn can be interpreted to include homosexual "marriage."

National parties represented in the EPP have submitted proposed amendments to the text. A copy of proposed amendments obtained by the Friday Fax aims at restoring the strong pro-life and pro-family language deleted since the 2004 EPP statement. For example, one party proposes restoring references to protecting human dignity through a proper understanding of subsidiarity, a principle whereby decisions are made at the level closest to those affected by policy, and not by unaccountable bureaucrats and committees in Brussels.

Another proposed amendment focuses on replacing secular-humanist language in the 2009 text with explicit reference to Europe's Judeo-Christian heritage, arguing that while "there are of course other philosophical and political trends in Europe," it is through the Christian Democrats that "the Christian inspiration [of European culture] must be declared."

Final approval of text is scheduled for March 29th in Warsaw. Given the venue, the role of the Polish MEPs is thought to be pivotal and they are expected to lobby for a return to strong pro-life and pro-family statements.

... raramente está isolada de uma comunidade de companheiros de jornada.

... resulta frequentemente em oração compassiva ou acção pela paz e pela justiça.

... admite que é muitas vezes através da dor, do fracasso, ou de uma crise que somos levados a uma espiritualidade mais profunda.

... sabe que a viagem raramente pode ser realizada sem perigo isoladamente sem algum guia ou tutor, ainda que seja apenas um texto sagrado, ou melhor ainda se for uma pessoa com experiência e sabedoria; apercebe-se do perigo do entusiasmo religioso sem um guia.

... reconhece que a jornada espiritual está infestada de muitos escolhos, armadilhas, e ilusões. Está disposta a testar os “avanços” de alguém com os outros.

... não faz um ídolo a partir de qualquer símbolo religioso, objecto, projecto, ou prática, nem do seu próprio caminho religioso.

... deve estar preparada para dar testemunho, mas nunca emitir juízos sobre aqueles cujas convicções conflituam com as nossas; procura a verdade e defende-a com paixão, mas nunca age como se tivesse a reivindicação exclusiva da verdade ou moralidade; nunca, em nenhuma situação, alega que a sua convicção, por mais profunda que possa ser, decide pela consciência de outra pessoa.

... sabe, compreende profundamente, que nenhuma crise moral pode alguma vez dispensar a pessoa de consciência de pleno respeito à liberdade e responsabilidade de qualquer outra consciência."

Lembro-me de levar a saquita do farnel às costas, um garrucito na cabeça, o gasómetro pendurado ao ombro e, com as mãozitas nos bolsos, tuc...tuc...tuc. Era uma hora e meia a pé para cada lado. E se fôssemos para um escritório! Mas era andar ali com uma picareta e tudo o mais. Agora há máquinas, mas antes era tudo manual. A nossa família, os nossos pais e as raparigas ... as raparigas só as víamos aos Domingos. Era de oito em oito dias. Ainda sou do tempo de se ganhar 5$00, por dia. Quando foi do ciclone, aí em 1940, acartei às costas muitos toros de madeira para queimar e ganhava 2$50, meio dia e 5$00, o dia. A vida aqui era muito ingrata, e ainda havia quem passasse pior. Seja louvado Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo!
Começo por recordar um final de tarde da minha já tão afastada meninice em que minha avó Rosinda me chamou de parte para me oferecer um livro que houvera sido de seu pai.

Tratava-se de uma sóbria encadernação do best-seller da espiritualidade medieval atribuído a Thomas A Kempis, a «Imitação de Cristo». [1] Como já sabia ler, podia ser guardião daquele «tesouro», com a condição de o espreitar cada dia…No caminho da vida salto trinta anos, para um encontro numa pequena livraria em Washington Sq., New York, de um livro denominado: JESUS, CEO. [2]

Este livro trouxe-me a justificação para a resposta impulsiva que dei a um desses irritantes inquéritos que os jornalistas gostam de nos enviar: qual o maior gestor de todos os tempos:

JESUS, Claro!

A liderança é peça fundamental na gestão de negócios. Dela depende em grande medida a sua «excelência».

Neste tempo em que festejamos a Páscoa do Senhor, é do uso da sabedoria neotestamentaria para desenvolver excelência na gestão que gostaria de reflectir convosco. Porquê?

Acreditem que é uma grande honra para mim estar aqui convosco, mas sinto-me bastante constrangido! È que estou em frente de tantas personalidades cheias de experiência, de quem só tenho que apreender, numa sala de alguma forma ligada à «minha» paróquia, local onde sempre venho escutar…

Razão pela qual pedi que me deixassem partilhar convosco esta pequena reflexão sobre o inesgotável mistério d’Aquele que considero o maior Gestor.

Encontrei-a na fusão dos dois livros que vos mencionei. Desse merger esboço aqui algumas ideias na esperança de que também vos possam inspirar. Se tal não acontecer é só culpa da minha notória fraqueza analítica e linguística! Verifiquem então nos originais…

JESUS, CEO ou o uso da sabedoria neotestamentaria para desenvolver uma liderança inspiradora, baseia-se em três simples premissas:

A - Uma pessoa treinou doze homens que influenciaram de tal forma o mundo a ponto do próprio tempo ser registado como antes ou depois da sua existência.

B - O seu staff era totalmente humano e não divino…um staff que apesar da sua iliteracia, questionáveis backgrounds, sentimentos facciosos, cobardia momentânea avançou no desempenho das missões que Ele os treinou para fazer. Eles fizeram-no por uma razão principal – para estarem de novo com Ele.

C - O seu estilo de liderança foi previsto para ser posto em prática por todos nós.

Os colaboradores que se vão cruzando no nosso caminho não são anjos com halos fosforescentes mas humanos, como nós, com qualidades e defeitos.

Como Jesus, também nós dependemos deles para realizar os objectivos a que nos propomos.

É, pois, na análise da vida de Cristo, sob três perspectivas: a sua força de auto controle, a sua força de acção e a sua força relacional, que tentarei encontrar ideias para uma excelência na gestão.

Para cada uma delas tentarei apresentar uma dezena de aspectos e outras tantas interrogações sobre a nossa vida.

Vou começar com a primeira perspectiva:

1. FORÇA DE AUTO-CONTROLE

1.1. Começo com o «statement»: Eu Sou.
E, questiono-me:

Será que já escrevi uma lista dos meus talentos, daquilo que sou? Quais os três aspectos mais relevante? (sou uma ponte)

1.2. As afirmações «Eu Sou» são aquilo que Ele veio a ser.
O que é que eu me digo a mim cada dia? Com que bons, belos, verdadeiros e puros pensamentos alimento, cada dia, a minha mente?

1.3. Ele manteve um contacto constante com o Seu «Chefe».
Sei quem é verdadeiramente o meu chefe? Com que frequência comunico com ele?

1.4. Ele focalizou-se na sua missão.
Qual é a minha missão? Consigo defini-la em duas frases? Consigo listar aquilo em que ando distraído?

1.5. Ele acreditou em si próprio.
Quanto acredito em mim?

1.6. Ele fez coisas difíceis.
Que coisas difíceis sinto, neste momento preciso, dever fazer? Tenciono fazê-las mesmo se isso significar ficar só.

1.7. Ele disse obrigado.
Digo obrigado antes de pedir algo? A Deus, ao meu chefe, ao meu staff? Apercebo-me que ter um coração agradecido pode livrar-me de precisar de um transplantado?

1.8. Ele estava num constante estado de celebração.
Quando e o que celebro? Grandes e pequenas coisas?

1.9. Ele via o amor a controlar o seu plano.
Que coisas más na vinha vida actual poderiam tornar-se em coisas boas?

Consigo enumerar algumas coisas boas que eu realizei a partir de coisa más no passado?

A quem tendo culpar quando grandes ou pequenas coisas correm mal?

Quem culpou Jesus?

1.10. Ele não subestimou pequenas coisas.
De que forma na minha vida ou no meu negócio eu estou subestimando o dia das pequenas coisas? Que coisa fiz eu hoje que gostasse de ver multiplicado?

Passo agora para a segunda perspectiva, ou seja a acção:

2 – FORÇA NA ACÇÃO

2.1. Ele via tudo como estando vivo. (cheio de possibilidades)
Que situações na minha vida considerei «mortas»?

Como é que as minhas acções podem alterar as minhas prioridades e a minha maneira de estar no planeta?

2.2. Ele actuou.
Quanto activo e criativo sou eu? Estou a fazer coisas novas ou sou só «esponja»? Posso fazer mais? Quando? Onde?

2.3. Ele tinha um plano.
Qual é o meu plano? Escrevi-o? Está claro? Pode ser comunicado? É exequível? Como o posso executar? Quando o vou começar?

2.4. Ele formou uma equipa.
Que partes de projectos continuo eu a tentar fazer sozinho? Porquê? Qual é a minha verdadeira equipa, remunerada e não remunerada? Qual poderia ser?

2.5. Ele via as coisas de maneira diferente.
Que vejo eu de forma diferente? Algo que poderia ou deveria ser mudado? Que estou a fazer para que isso aconteça?

2.6. Ele quebrou barreiras.
Se eu fizer o que está verdadeiramente no meu coração, com quem ou com o quê entraria em conflito? Sei descrever as «tropas» que me acompanham? Que medos ou conflitos me impedem de ser um líder?

2.7. Ele era visível.
Como sou visível enquanto líder? Quais serão 10 novas maneiras de aumentar a minha visibilidade?

2.8. Ele treinou os seus substitutos.
Quais seriam os benefícios da minha substituição no topo da mesa? Estou seguro?

«Senhor,…Vós tendes nas mãos o meu destino. » [3]

2.9. Ele veio para ser uma bênção.
Como posso eu ser uma maior bênção para os outros? Com o que se parece uma bênção? Quem foi uma bênção para mim? Como?

2.10. Ele sabia que não estava só.
Sinto algum poder superior que cuida de mim de forma pessoal? Que diminutivo escolheria para Deus? Este pensamento ofende-me? Se sim, porquê?

Finalmente o ultimo aspecto a sua força no relacionamento:

3 – FORÇA RELACIONAL

3.1. Ele deu-lhes uma visão de algo maior do que eles.
Que respostas dariam os meus colaboradores se lhes perguntassem: «qual é o vosso trabalho?». E mais importante: «porque é significativo o vosso trabalho?» Será que lhes comunico os mais altos propósitos para as suas actividades?

3.2. Ele disse sim.
Experimentei alguma vez 24 horas a dizer sim aos pedidos dos outros? Quando disse eu sim de forma espontânea e fiquei contente de o ter dito? Não deveria praticar com alegria e confiança o dizer mais vezes sim? (o mundo está cheio de nãos)

3.3. Ele estava aberto aos outros e a suas ideias.
Quando ouvi e implementei uma ideia de um colaborador? Acho que todas as boas ideias vêm de mim?

3.4. Ele foi transparente perante eles.
Que factos ou situações estou a ocultar do meu staff? Que obstáculos me impedem de ser um líder transparente?

3.5. Ele acreditou neles.
Como posso mostrar ao meu staff que acredito nele?

3.6. Ele perdoou-lhes. Serviu-os. Amou-os. Defendeu-os.
Que situações tive que perdoar recentemente? Pensei em dez maneiras de melhor servir o meu staff? Se os meus colaboradores tivessem que descrever os meus sentimentos para com eles, quem diriam que eu amava? Porquê? Como posso mostrar o meu amor pelo meu staff? Embaracei algum em público? Consigo lembrar-me de três vezes em que tive que escolher entre repreender ou defender um colaborador? Quais foram as consequências?

3.7. Ele deu-lhes autoridade.
Quanta autoridade dou? Que indicações dei aos meus colaboradores sobre o que eles podem e não podem fazer? Que áreas de autoridade ainda não partilhei com eles? Porquê?

3.8. Ele brincou com eles.
Quando brinquei com os meus colaboradores pela ultima vez? Quando ri com eles pela ultima vez? Estou a conduzir as minhas pessoas para uma mesa ou para uma festa?

3.9. Ele via-os como dons de Deus para ele.
Acredito que o meu staff é um dom de Deus para mim? Trato-os de acordo com isso? Consigo ver um aspecto em cada um deles que fosse cuidadosamente escolhido para as minhas necessidades? Consigo ver um aspecto em cada um deles que fosse cuidadosamente escolhido para a minha alegria?

o cavalo perdido.
Nesta história o cavalo de um fazendeiro dá à sola. Os vizinhos do fazendeiro vêm lastimar-se com ele pela sua perda e azar. "Este é um grande infortúnio! " exclamam eles.
O fazendeiro calmamente responde, "A ver, vamos".
O próximo dia o cavalo do fazendeiro volta e traz com ele seis cavalos selvagens.
Os vizinhos vêm visitá-lo novamente e alegremente observam, "Que sorte" a tua!!
O fazendeiro calmamente responde, "A ver, vamos".
No dia seguinte o filho do fazendeiro começa a treinar os cavalos para montar, mas cai e parte uma perna. Uma vez mais os vizinhos vêm, desta vez oferecer as suas condolências pelo azar do fazendeiro. E uma vez mais a resposta dele é "A ver, vamos".
No dia seguinte, os oficiais do exército vêm e levam todos os homens jovens como recrutas para a guerra, mas porque o filho do fazendeiro tem uma perna partida, não o levam. Assim os vizinhos vêm para se alegrar com o sucedido.
O fazendeiro sorri, considera a sua sorte, e uma vez mais responde, "como sempre – temos de esperar para ver."

the lost horse

In this story a farmer's horse runs away. The farmer's neighbors come to sympathize with him over his loss and bad luck. "This is a great misfortune!" they exclaim. The farmer calmly responds, "We will see." The next day the farmer's horse comes back and brings with it six wild horses. The neighbors come to visit again and gleefully observe, "What good fortune has befallen you". The farmer calmly responds, "We will see." The following day the farmer's son starts to train the horses for riding, but is thrown and breaks his leg. Once again the neighbors come over, this time to offer their sympathy for the farmer's bad luck. And once again his reply is "We will see." The next day army officers come and take all the young men as recruits to the war, but because the farmer's son has a broken leg, they don't take him. So the neighbors come over to rejoice how well everything has turned out. The farmer smiles, considers his fortunes, and once again replies, "As always - we can only wait and see."
